Genesis 37:12-24: “Now his brothers went to pasture their father’s flock near Shechem. And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” So he said to him, “Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.” So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, “What are you seeking?” “I am seeking my brothers,” he said. “Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.” And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan. They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt. When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes and returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go?” Then they took Joseph’s robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. And he identified it and said, “It is my son’s robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.” Then Jacob tore his garments and put a sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son for many days. All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father wept for him. Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard.”
Are you living in fear of the devil? Are you constantly anxious about the work of the devil in your life? Do you lie in bed dreading evil events happening to you? Do you believe you will never get pregnant? Are you frustrated with your children? Do you have a medical condition that is getting worse and you are afraid that it will kill you? Child of God, I want you to know that amidst all these challenges you are going through, God has a plan for you. Worry less and relax. Truth is, God’s plans cannot be thwarted. Ask Him for His peace, then make your plans in accordance to His word.
In all that you do, never allow fear to hinder you from making any plans for the future. Remember, God’s plan is not always easy but His timing and strategy are perfect. In the scripture above, you will find that the main character in the passage is not Joseph or his brothers, but the sovereign God of heaven whose plan cannot be delayed or stopped by anyone.
God’s plan cannot be thwarted. Why? Because He is our creator, sustainer and Lord of all.
“Therefore, hide yourself in him; the name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it, and they are saved” (Proverbs 18:1).
No power of the devil can stop the plan of God for your life; His will for your life will always come to pass. Keep in mind that nobody can assault you without God’s permission. Children of God, you are indestructible unless God calls you home. Today, many Christians are more afraid of a witch doctor than God. Learn to not allow the fear of evil men and women stop you from moving forward with making plans for the future. I am here to tell you that no demon can destroy or attack you without God’s permission. Why? Because you are a child of God, and should not be afraid of evil men and women.
One of the things that hold us back from making plans is that we secretly wish some people will fail in their endeavors. We have allowed the devil to plant seeds of unforgiveness in us. We all need to be careful to not allow jealousy become a tool used by the devil against us. The hatred Joseph’s brothers had towards him led them to consider murder to satisfy the jealousy and bitterness in their hearts. Believer in Christ, jealousy, bitterness and hatred has no place in your life. Joseph’s brothers could not stop hating him; they were jealous of all God had deposited in him. His brothers drank out of the cup of hatred and bitterness and it almost led them to murder. Their father, Jacob, who was also a deceiver, was experiencing the results of his evil acts. However, God could not stop loving and protecting Joseph. His brother's hatred towards him was driven by lack of fear of God. When we fear God, it eliminates any evil action towards our fellow man. This story was driven by God’s love for Joseph. God’s love for you as His child is not based on your understanding of His love but His plan for your life. It is based on the heart of God for His children.
1. What are five lies the devil tells us about the plans of God?
-
- God does not care about your future plans.
- God will only help you if you know the right person and are well-connected to the right people.
- God does not allow U-turns. If you mess up, there is no chance for God to change your life.
- You do not deserve God’s grace and mercy because you have not been reading your Bible or praying
- God’s plan for us is not good.
2. What are five life-changing truths you should know about the plans of God?
- God's plan cannot be stopped by any act of the devil.
- God’s plan for your life is good. It will lead to your personal development and growth.
- God’s plan for your life will be accomplished in His way and timing. “All the events of a believer’s life are controlled by God’s divine plan. God’s divine plan when experienced always leads to receiving His blessings. (Romans 8:28). God’s divine plan gives purpose and meaning to a believer’s life.” Gary Barker
- God’s plan can be delayed by your lack of preparation. However, it cannot be destroyed.
Let's take a minute to reflect on these verses:
Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Proverbs 16:9: The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Proverbs 19:21: Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
Jeremiah 29:11-14: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.
Now, let's reflect on our last question for the day:
3. What are the 10 things I should do when a close family member is making my life miserable by causing me physical pain or emotional discomfort?
- Remember God’s plan for your life cannot be stopped by their evil actions.
- Be wise in all your conversations with evil men and women in your life. Your innocence does not require you to be careless. Joseph was innocent, but totally naive. We look at Joseph’s story and are amazed that he never suspected his honest report of his brothers’ failings (37:2), his father’s open favoritism (vv. 3–4), and his narration of his dreams (vv. 5–11) would make his brothers jealous and his life miserable. Joseph was only 17 at the time, so you have no excuse. “It is often a quality of the virtuous to expect others to be as honest, generous and good as they are. Innocence is attractive and to be cultivated. But we need to guard against a naivete that unwittingly provokes hostility.”-The Bible Reader's Companion.
- Do not stay with them if you feel your life is in danger. It is not God’s will for you to be tortured by one who loves you.
- Be honest with them about the pain they are causing you.
- Remember, God is wiser than you. So, do not trust your own wisdom.
- Do not allow Satan to plant the seed of bitterness in you. Walk in love but be wise in all your interactions with them. .
- Leave and love them from a distance. Establish clear and specific boundaries. Be humble but be honest about your desire for respect and honor.
- Pray for them each day, for God to show them the evil of their ways. Learn to say no without providing any explanation.
- Resist the urge to attack them. Do not get into arguments or physical confrontation with them.
- Talk to a wise Christian counselor.
