nder the bridge, on Old Fulton Street, people watched from the sidewalk, and others pulled over their cars and got out to watch. For several minutes, neither the officers nor the man changed position. Then, suddenly, the man either began to lose his grip or tried to wrench free of the officers.

On Old Fulton Street, there were shouts of “Oh, my God!” “No!” and “Pull him back!” As the man struggled, lurching backward, other officers raced up to the railing. Slowly, though, the officers hauled him up and over the railing.

Cheers rose from the bridge and Old Fulton Street. Within minutes, the emergency vehicles had left and traffic flowed again on a warm holiday weekend. A few pedestrians looked at photographs on each other’s cellphones and cameras before moving on.

It was not immediately known where the man was taken after the rescue.

School superintendent to Governor: Please make my school a prison | Dangerously Irrelevant | Big Think

This is why I’m proposing to make my school a prison. The State of Michigan spends annually somewhere between $30,000 and $40,000 per prisoner, yet we are struggling to provide schools with $7,000 per student. I guess we need to treat our students like they are prisoners, with equal funding. Please give my students three meals a day. Please give my children access to free health care. Please provide my school district Internet access and computers. Please put books in my library. Please give my students a weight room so we can be big and strong. We provide all of these things to prisoners because they have constitutional rights. What about the rights of youth, our future?!

Brady Boyd | Fast Food Marketing and the Local Church

Have we, as American pastors, given up our calling as shepherds and unknowingly become fast food entrepreneurs who are building a religious business and not a church? Before I dive into this, let me first confess. I am the pastor of a church with several big buildings, one of them with a cafe and a bookstore that sells products. Our stage is backed by a huge high definition screen and surrounded by lights of every color.

In many ways, we are not unlike any other mega church in America because, we too, have used marketing techniques to attract a crowd on Sundays.  But, the internal conversations among our leaders are shifting. We want to be what Eugene Peterson calls “a company of pastors” and not a company of shopkeepers. Church is not a product to be consumed like a gym membership, but rather a holy gathering of sinners who are becoming saints because of grace.

I love how the neighboring businesses are welcoming and excited to have Cedarcreek in their shopping complex.

Elsewhere I have seen businesses complain (usually to try and keep a church out) but Cedarcreek has really proven to be a good neighbor and you would think the businesses in some strip centers that are suffering would welcome the influx of people.

Work the System | Jenni Catron

I see this happen all the time in organizations.

• The organization outgrows existing systems.
• Staff feel the strain and frustration of old systems.
• Leadership create new systems.
• Everyone embraces the new systems… for a time.
• But slowly you drift back to old habits, and elements of the new system are forgotten.

Usually it’s at this point that we blame the system.  We assume that the system was bad and we abandon it.

But I believe that more often than system failure, it’s user failure.

As humans, we are creatures of habit and it takes tremendous effort and energy to break old habits and build new ones.

This is where leadership becomes critical.

Leaders are habit-breakers and habit-creators.

Harold Camping's Family Radio network, based in Oakland, Calif., has put up signs across the country warning of "Judgment Day May 21."

Without support from churches -- which he says are ruled by Satan -- Camping gives mathematical formulas he says are encoded in the Bible as proof that on Saturday, believers will be "raptured" into heaven and the rest of mankind will endure torment and tribulation until God destroys the world Oct. 21, The Denver Post reports.

He says the Rapture will begin with a great earthquake on the Pacific Rim.

Camping, 89, once was a member of the " but now writes: "On May 21, 1988, God finished using the churches and congregations of the world. The spirit of God left all churches, and Satan, the man of sin, entered into the churches to rule.
